Week One

Hello Everyone, My name is Olivia Smith. I was born and raised in North Pole, Alaska. some of my hobbies include stress baking, drawing, painting, organizing my schedules, and hanging out with my little sister. Currently, I am pursuing a bachelor's degree in elementary education to fulfill my childhood dream of being a teacher here in Fairbanks.

When I was in fourth grade I used to draw pictures of my classmates and the other girls in my class thought it was so cool that I could draw. it was then that I decided that I actually liked drawing. before that year, I was homeschooled and only hung out with my older brother. the only art class I have ever taken was in middle school because my friend was taking it. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about all the different techniques the class taught me but I never took another class after that. In high school, I really started to form a personal identity with my art style and came to really like what I came out with when I drew. A lot of people said my style was a little weird and creepy but I really like drawing very disproportional figures with really sketchy lines. During my after-school job at an elementary school, I got treated like a printer by the third-grade class there and got a lot of practice drawing Pokemon characters and Harry Potter for them so they could color them in.

Art is never something I wanted to pursue in life but it brings up a lot of different feelings for me. I love my art because every time I look at anything I've made, I can remember almost exactly what I was listening to, watching, or what the conversation I was having with someone was about while I was creating it. it brings me right back there.

for this week's art, I chose the Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I, also called Lady in Gold by Gustav Klimt in 1907. It is an oil painting with gold leaves on canvas. The first time I saw this painting was in a history textbook and ever since then, it's been my favorite piece of art. I love all of the different things that are happening around the canvas. the different aspects of African, Asian, Byzantine, and Egyptian references that bring the piece into what it became is such a beautiful blend and I think everyone should think so too!

  2. That's cool that you want to be a teacher! I love working with kids too! I worked with mostly 2-4 year olds at my last job. They're so sweet. Also the art piece you chose is so beautiful. It would be so cool to see something like that in person.

  3. I absolutely adore Gustav Klimt's work! So glad it get such recognition nowadays (especially with other pieces like The Kiss), and this one you chose is so gorgeous. Never realized it was made with gold leaf.
